    Black Walnut Cake (Easy)

    List of Ingredients

1 Box of any Duncan Hines WHITE cake mix
3 small bags (unless you can find 1 large bag) of BLACK WALNUTS (See Hints below)

    Frosting
1 stick Butter - must use real butter
8 tbsp of white shortening - Crisco is the only one that has worked for me
    1 cup granlated sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    2/3 cup milk
    3 tbsp flour

    Recipe

Mix cake batter according to directions. Before pouring into prepared round cake pans, take one of the bags of black walnuts and coarsely crush. Add the crushed nuts to the cake batter and then bake as directed. Let cool completely before frosting.

    Frosting:
Combine all of the above ingredients in a bowl and mix at high speed for 12 minutes.

While mixing the frosting coarsely crush the rest of the walnuts. Before frosting the cake, add about 1/2 of the crushed nuts to the frosting. Frost as usual. Sprinkle the remaining nuts on top as a garnish.

    Hints:
    1. You *must* use Black Walnuts - English walnuts do not give you the full rich flavor of this cake. I have only been able to locate black walnuts in the little Planters Nuts bags in the baking or snack area of the grocery.

    2. Tightly cover cake and set in refrigerator for about 24 - 36 hours before serving that the flavor is much, much better throughout.

    3. Cake can be frozen; unfrosted!
