List of Ingredients
2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold butter
2 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1/4 cup dairy sour cream
2 tablespoons water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg white
10 drops black walnut extract (optional)
1/4 cup sugar
3 cups walnuts, finely ground
2 tablespoons milk
sifted powdered sugar
Recipe
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Using a pastry blender cut in butter until mixture resembles small peas.
In a small mixing bowl, beat egg white and if desired black walnut extract with an electric mixer on medium to high speed until soft peaks form (tips stand straight). Fold in ground walnuts.
Lightly grease cookie sheets. Divide dough into fourths. Working with one portion of dough at a time, roll our on lightly floured surface to form an 8 inch circle. Cut circle into 8 wedges.
Place a slightly rounded teaspoon of the walnut mixture at the wide end of each wedge. Roll up each wedge from wide end to the tip. Place tip down about one inch apart on prepared cookie sheets. Curve each slightly to form a crescent. Brush with milk. Repeat with remaining dough.
Bake in a 400º oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until bottoms are golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool. Sift powdered sugar over cookies.
