Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
3 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups unsalted butter or shortening
-- (such as Crisco)
5 eggs -- beaten
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cocoa (up to 2/3 cup)
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
chocolate syrup
confectioner's sugar
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Bring all ingredients to room temperature.
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the sugar and butter. Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating after each. Scrape down sides of bowl.
In a second mixing bowl, sift together the baking powder, flour, salt, and cocoa. Alternately add the flour mixture and the milk, a little at a time of each, to the sugar, butter, and egg mixture, beating to incorporate as you add each. After all the flour and milk is blended in, add the vanilla extract and blend in well.
Pour into a greased and lightly floured loaf pan or Bundt pan and bake in a 300 degree F. oven for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Serve on individual desert plates, drizzled with chocolate syrup and dusted with confectioner's sugar.
