Pear Almond Muffins

1 3/4 cups flour
1/3 cup sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg -- beaten
3/4 cup milk
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 cup pears -- peeled and chopped
1/2 cup almonds -- chopped and toasted
Stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a medium mixing bowl. Make a well in the center.
In another bowl combine the egg, milk and oil. Add all at once to the dry mixture. Stir until just moistened. The batter will be lumpy. Carefully fold in the pears and 1/4 cup of the almonds.
Spoon the batter into the greased muffin cups, filling each 2/3 full. Sprinkle the remaining almonds on top. Bake in a 400 degree F. oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden. Remove muffins from cups and cool on a wire rack.
