    100 Year Old Blackberry Cake from West Virginia

    Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
    -------- ------------ --------------------------------
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    1/2 cup butter or Crisco
    2 cups flour
    1/2 cups buttermilk
    2 teaspoons nutmeg
    2 cups blackberries
    5 eggs
    2 teaspoons baking soda
    2 teaspoons cinnamon
    1/2 cup cloves

    Cream sugar, shortening, and eggs. Mix together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Add to shortening mix, then mix in buttermilk. Add blackberries last.

    Bake in greased and floured tube pan at 350 degrees F. for 1 hour.

    Frost with caramel or vanilla icing.
