Italian Style Salisbury Steak

1 pound ground beef
1/4 cup seasoned bread crumbs
1/4 cup water
1 egg -- slightly beaten
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup Italian salad dressing
2 cups onions -- thinly sliced
2 cups mushroom -- thinly sliced
1 can 8 oz tomato sauce
1/2 teaspoon basil leaf

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl combine first 6 ingredients. Shape into 4 to 6 oval patties. Place in a 1 1/2 quart oblong baking dish.

In a medium skillet, heat dressing and cook onion and mushrooms for about 5 minutes. Stir in sauce and basil. Spoon over patties. Bake for 30 minutes.

NOTES : Add another can of sauce to serve over pasta. Brown patties before cooking patties.
