Caring For Your Cast Iron Skillet

Seasoning your skillet will keep it free from rust and prevent your food from sticking. Rust, metallic taste, or discolored food are signs that you need to thoroughly wash and reseason your skillet. Sometimes it can even come from cooking acidic foods, like tomatoes.

    To season your skillet:
    1. Wash, rinse, and dry thoroughly. If you must use soap, use a mild detergent, never an abrasive or the dishwasher. Never use scour pads.

    2. Warm the skillet slightly. Grease the skillet with Crisco, using a paper towel to place a thin layer of the shortening over the entire surface. NEVER USE SALTED FAT, LIKE BUTTER! Make sure you get all the nooks and crannies!

    3. Place skillet in an oven at low heat, 300 degrees for 30 to 60 minutes. Remove from oven and pour out excess grease. Wipe with a paper towel and store, when storing place a paper towel in the skillet to absorb any moisture. Now your all seasoned and ready to go!
