    Cherry Walnut Dream Bars

    CRUST:
    2 1/2 c. flour
    1/2 c. sugar
    1 c. butter, softened (2 sticks)
    Blend like pie dough until crumbly. Press into ungreased 10 1/2 x 15 1/2-inch baking pan. Bake 10-12 minutes at 325°.

    FILLING:
    2 1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
    1/2 c. flour
    1 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. salt
    5 eggs, slightly beaten
    2 c. chopped walnuts
    1 (10 oz.) jar maraschino cherries, drained and chopped (reserve 2 TBS. juice)
    1 tsp. vanilla
    While crust is baking, combine dry ingredients. Stir in remaining ingredients. Pour over partially baked crust. Return to oven and bake 25-30 minutes at 325°. Let cool about 20 minutes.

    GLAZE: (optional)
    1 c. powdered sugar
    2 TBS. reserved cherry juice
    1/2 tsp. lemon juice.
    Combine and spread over bars, while they're still warm.
    Cool completely and cut in bars to serve.

    Yield: 8 doz. 1-1/4 inch bars.
