    Crumb Cake, Apple

    Source of Recipe

Adapted from a Pennsylvania Dutch recipe

    List of Ingredients

    1 apple
    2 C brown sugar
    2 C flour
    1/2 C butter
    1/2 C hazelnuts, divided
    1 egg, beaten
    1 C sour milk
    1 tsp baking soda

    Recipe

In large bowl add the brown sugar, flour and butter. Work these ingredients by rubbing between fingers to a crumb. Reserve 2/3 Cup for topping. Add 1/4 cup of the hazelnuts to the topping.
In the bowl, add egg, sour milk 1/4 cup hazelnuts and baking soda. Mix until just well moistened. Thinly slice the apple into the bottom of an 8x10 inch baking pan. Pour the batter over, then sprinkle the reserved crumbs and hazelnuts over the top.Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. When this cake is warm it can be served as is. If it is stored in the refrigerator it is better with a lemon sauce, whipped cream or ice cream as it becomes dense with chilling.
