Cake, Cream-Filled Chestnut

1 pound chestnuts in the shell; or use 1 1/4 cups pecans, chopped
3/4 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
6 eggs, separated
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup milk
Recipe
Chestnut Cream;
Prepare chestnuts .
Cream butter with sugar and vanilla extract until fluffy.
Mixing well. after each addition, add the chestnut puree, then the egg yolks, one at a time.
Mix flour with baking powder, and add alternately with milk to the chestnut mixture, mixing well after each addition.
Beat egg whites until stiff, but not dry.
Fold into batter.
Turn mixture into 2 greased and floured 9 inch round layer cake pans.
Bake at 350degrees F. about 25 minutes, or until done.
Let cool, then put layers together and decorate cake with chestnut cream.
