    List of Ingredients

    2 C bread crumbs
    1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
    1 tsp grated lemon peel
    1/4 tsp salt
    4 medium granny smith apples, sliced
    1/4 C water
    2 T lemon juice
    sugar to taste, (up to 1 C)

    Recipe

    Blend together bread crumbs, cinnamon, lemon peel and salt. Spread 1/3 of crumbs in bottom of 1 quart casserole. Wash, core, pare and thinly slice the apples and place 1/2 in a layer over crumbs.Sprinkle with sugar. Repeat and top with the remaining bread crumbs. Mix the water and lemon juice and drizzle over the the top. Bake at 375 degrees 25-30 minutes, or until apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Serve warm or cold.
    Note; Any cooking apple can be used in place of granny smiths.

    Peach betty;
    reduce the cinnamon to 3/4 tsp and add 1/4 tsp nutmeg. substitute 3 C drained, sliced, peaches for apples.
