Grate a soup plate full of brown breadcrumbs [2 cups]. mix with 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and fry gently in a dessertspoon of butter, stirring all the time, until the crumbs are crisp.
peel and core a pound and a half of apples. Stew them [in a half cupful of water] until quite soft and mushy. Put a layer of the fried crumbs in a glass dish, cover with a layer of stewed apples and continue like this until the dish is full, making the last layer crumbs. Set aside to cool. before serving grate a good layer of chocolate over the top. Top with whipped cream. Serve cold.
