3 salt herring
6 medium size potatoes
2 C diced rutabaga
1/4 C oatmeal
thyme

Cut fish into serving pieces. Soak in cold water overnight if herring is very salty. Pare potatoes, cut in halves and put on to boil in 4 cups water. Add diced rutabaga and oatmeal for thickening soup. Cook until vegetables are nearly done. Add herring and seasonings. Let come to a boil and let simmer a few minutes. Serve hot. Good with lefse or flatbread.
