    Caramel Apple Bars

This was best served warm on the same day it was made. The second day it got a little soggy on top, but it was still delicious.

    List of Ingredients

    1/2 cup butter
    1/4 cup shortening
    1 cup packed brown sugar
    1 3/4 cups flour
1 cup old fashioned or quick oats
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup chopped pecans -- optional

    Filling:
5 cups tart apples -- peeled, cored, and coarsely chopped or sliced thin
    3 tablespoons flour
    14 ounces pkg. caramels
    3 tablespoons butter

    Recipe

In mixing bowl, cream butter, shortening and brown sugar until fluffy. Add flour, oats, salt and baking soda; mix well. Stir in pecans if using. Set aside 2 cups of this mixture. Press remaining oat mixture into the bottom of an ungreased 13x9 pan.

For filling, toss apples with flour; spoon over the crust. In a saucepan, melt the caramels and butter over low heat; drizzle over apples. Top with the reserved oat mixture.

Bake at 400 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve warm or at room-temperature.

Serving Ideas : Could serve with whipped cream or ice cream, but it's delicious all on it's own.
