Mom's Hearty Lentil Soup

1 cup lentils
5 cups water
1 bay leaf
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
1 carrot, diced
1 stalk celery, diced
dash thyme
1 cup canned tomatoes
3 hot dogs, sliced
Recipe
Rinse lentils, add water, bay leaf, salt and boil slowly until lentils are tender, 30-45 minutes. Remover bay leaf. Cook onion in butter slowly until transparent. Add to lentils with carrots, celery, thyme and tomatoes. Cook 15-20 minutes longer, adding hot dogs last 5 minus. Makes 4-6 servings.
