    List of Ingredients

    2 cakes compressed yeast
    1/4 C lukewarm water
    1 C milk or 1/2 and 1/2
    1/4 C shortening (grandma uses butter)
    1/2 C sugar
    1 t salt
    2 eggs beaten
    5 C sifted flour
    1/2 t nutmeg

    Recipe

    Soften yeast in lukewarm water. Scald milk. Add shortnening (or butter), sugar and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Add eggs and yeast. Add flour and nutmeg to make a soft dough. Turn out on a lightly floured board and knead the dough until satiny and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover and let rise until doubled in bulk. When light, punch down and let the dough stand for 10 minutes, covered.Pull out 1/2 inch thick and cut with biscuit cutter. Let rise until double in size and light. Fry in deep fat 380-390 degrees for 3 minutes to a side. Dust with sugar if desired.
