    French Custard Toast (Pain Perdu)

    1 loaf tired French bread
    4 eggs
    2/3 cup sugar
    4 cups heavy cream
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1/2 tsp. nutmeg
    Grated peel of 2 lemons

    Recipe



    1) Slice bread 1½" thick, and dry in warm oven without browning. Lay slices in a single layer in a glass dish with sides.

    2) Combine custard ingredients. Whisk well and pour over the bread. After 15-20 minutes, turn the slices. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

    3) Heat butter or oil in a large, non-stick skillet. Cook slices slowly on both sides until golden and the custard is cooked.

    The Pain Perdu may be topped with seasonal fruit such as mixed berries.
