Gran*s Date Loaf Candy
Source of Recipe
Char
List of Ingredients
3 cups white sugar (cane, not beet)
(This was written this way because the recipe was from the WAR years, WWII that is, and sugar was rationed...beet sugar was a substitute)
1 cup sweet milk (also known as WHOLE MILK!)Recipe
Mix sugar and milk together and let boil up real good. Add one cup ground dates, let cook until forms soft ball in cold water. Remove from fire and add one cup ground nuts and beat until stiff. Pour out on damp cloth....using hands roll the mixture into a long log. Roll log up in the damp cloth and let stand until cloth dries. Remove and wrap in waxed paper.
Granny says she just chops the nuts and dates a little, I do a lot or else you have big chunks.
This wording is exactly as my Granny wrote it all those years ago, complete with "taking it off the fire", boil up real good, etc. I left the wording in as it is part of our family heritage!
I also "cheated" as I didn't use muscle power to beat it stiff....I used my Kitchen Aid mixer!
A word of warning:!!! This stuff is very, very sweet and it is addictive! enjoy!
