If Ben Franklin had had his way, the turkey, a strictly native bird, would grace our nation's seal rather than the eagle, which inhabits other countries, too. By the same logic, we should say "As American as blueberry pie." Apples grow all over the world, while no other continent can boast of its blueberries. Thanks to prolific cultivation, the season begins well before the "natural" start in August. But the best berries still grow in the wild and appear in late summer.
