1 lb stewing beef cut into 1" cubes
1 tbsp shortening
3 cups hot water
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
2 medium carrots chopped into 1" pieces
1 large potato chopped into 1" pieces
1 medium turnip cut into 1" pieces
1 medium green pepper, cut into 1" pieces
1 medium stalk celery cut into 1" pieces
1 small onion chopped
1/2 tsp browning sauce (optional)
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 beef boullion cube
1 bay leaf
Recipe
Cook and stir beef in shortening in dutch oven until brown. Add hot water, 1/2 tsp salt, and the pepper. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer 2-2½ hours until beef is almost tender. Stir in vegetables, browning sauce, 1½ tsp salt, bouillon cube and bay leaf. Cover and simmer until veggies are tender - about 30 minutes. Thicken gravy with 2 tbsp flour mixed with 1/2 cup cold water. Boil and stir 1 minute until thick. Serve with dumplings.
