Soak about 1/2 cup dry navy beans in water overnight and rinse. Put them into a soup pot with a ham bone, 4 cups boiling water, 1 or 2 bay leaves, 5 or 6 whole peppercorns, and about 4 or 5 whole cloves.
Simmer for 3 hours. After 2 1/2 hours, add some chopped carrots, chopped celery, chopped onions, as much GARLIC as you want.
When the soup is done, take the ham bone out, cut off the meat and put the meat back into the pot. At this point I usually puree the soup in my food processor (my mom used to just mash it up some with a potato masher) and add a little milk if it's too thick. Sprinkle some garlic croutons on top.
