1 medium onion, chopped
5 cloves garlic, crushed
2 6oz cans tomato paste
1 C water
2 28oz cans crushed tomatoes
2 28oz cans tomato puree
1 T oregano
1 T basil
1 T parsley
1 t sugar
1 T salt

Brown onion lightly in a small amount of olive oil in a large pot. Add tomato paste and water; stir until tomato paste is thinned. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Bring to a slow boil and reduce heat; cook covered over low heat about 2 hours, stirring frequently to keep from burning. If sauce is too thick water may be added. If desired, meatballs or Italian sausage may be added to sauce.
