    1 lb chuck, tip or round (cut into 1-inch cubes)
    1 tbsp shortening
    3 cups hot water
    1/2 tsp salt
    1/8 tsp pepper
    1 large potato, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces
    2 medium carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces
    1 celery stalk, cut into 1-inch pieces
    1 small onion, chopped
    1 1/2 tsp salt
    1 beef bouillon cube
    1 bay leaf
    1/2 cup cold water
    2 tbsp flour

    Cook and stir beef in shortening until beef is brown. Add hot water, 1/2 tsp salt and pepper. Heat to boiling. Reduce heat. Cover and simmer until beef is tender, 2-2 1/2 hours.

    Stir in veggies, 1 1/2 tsp salt, bouillon and bay leaf. Simmer covered 30 minutes.

    Combine cold water and flour. Gradually stir into stew. heat to boiling, stirring one minute. Reduce heat.

    Drop dumpling dough by 10-12 spoonfuls onto hot stew. Cook uncovered 10 minutes. Cook covered 10 minutes.
