Breakfast Casserole II

2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
7 slices white bread
2 cups cooked ham, cooked sausage, or crisp-cooked bacon, chopped
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (8 ounces)
3 cups milk
6 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Grease a 2-quart rectangular baking dish; set aside.
Spread one side of each bread slice with butter. Cut bread into 1/2-inch cubes. Arrange bread cubes evenly in prepared baking dish. Arrange meat evenly over bread cubes. Sprinkle with 1 cup of the cheese.
In a medium bowl, combine milk, eggs, dry mustard, and pepper. Pour egg mixture over bread mixture in baking dish. Cover; refrigerate at least 8 hours or overnight.
Uncover and bake in a 350 degree F oven for 35 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake about 10 minutes more or until center is set and instant-read thermometer inserted in center registers 160 degrees F. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Makes 6 to 8 servings
