1 pound frozen unbaked white bread dough, thawed
1/2 cup tart diced apples (or 1/2 cup golden raisins)
1/2 cup dried currants
Flour, for kneading (optional)
Beaten egg, for glazing
Crushed sugar lumps, to finish
Shortening, for greasing
Butter, for serving
Recipe
1. Put the bread dough into a bowl with the apples and currants. Knead the fruit well into the dough to prevent it from sticking to the outside, adding a little flour if it is too sticky.
2. Divide the dough into 3 equal pieces. Using your hands, roll each piece into a rope, about 15 inches long. Lay ropes side-by-side on a work surface and braid them from the center to one end, then braid again from the center to the other end to complete the braid.
3. Lightly grease a large cookie sheet. Place the loaf on the sheet and tuck the ends neatly underneath. Cover with greased plastic wrap and leave to rise in a warm place for about 40 minutes or until the braid doubles in size. About 20 minutes before the loaf is risen and doubled in size, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
4. Uncover the loaf and brush with beaten egg, then sprinkle with crushed sugar lumps. Bake for about 30 minutes, until risen and golden. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Serve sliced with butter.
