    1/2 cup shortening

1-1/3 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar

    1 egg

    1/4 cup milk

    2 cups all-purpose flour

    1 teaspoon baking soda

    1/2 teaspoon salt

    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon EACH ground nutmeg and cardamom

    1 cup raisins

    1 cup chopped pecans

1 cup finely chopped unpeeled apple

    Vanilla frosting (recipe below)

    Recipe

    1. Cream shortening; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add egg and milk; beat well.

    2. Combine flour, soda, salt and spices; add to creamed mixture, mixing well. Stir in the raisins, pecans and apple.

    3. Drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls, 1-1/2 inches apart, onto greased cookie sheets. Bake at 400 degrees F. for 12 to 15 minutes.

    4. Meanwhile, make frosting. In a small bowl, combine 1-1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar, 1/8 teaspoon salt, 2-1/2 tablespoons milk, 1 tablespoon melted butter and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. Beat until smooth.
