1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a shallow ovenproof dish.
2. Cut a thin slice from the bottom of the celery to remove roots. Discard any discolored outer stalks. Cut off tops with the leaves and separate stalks. Cut large stalks into quarters length-wise. Wash thoroughly under cold running water and cut into 2-inch lengths.
3. Bring a pan of salted water to a boil and cook celery for 10 minutes. Drain well, then place in the greased dish and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
4. Pare and core apples and cut into thin slices (Brush with lemon juice if they start to discolor.) Arrange on top of the celery; dot with butter or margarine. Place bay leaves and cloves on top. Pour the broth into the dish, then sprinkle bacon over the top.
5. Bake for 30 minutes or until the celery and apples are tender and the bacon is crisp. Remove the bay leaves and cloves and serve at once.
