My Aunt Mary, who lived in Birmingham, Ala., used to make this for me when I was a little girl. She served grits, eggs and biscuits along with this wonderful dish.

6 ham slices, extra lean -- 1/4-inch thick
1/4 cup margarine
1/4 cup brown sugar -- firmly packed
1/2 cup strong black coffee


Recipe




Saute ham in margarine over low heat until light brown, turning several times. Remove ham from skillet and cover with foil to keep warm. Stir sugar into pan drippings and heat until sugar dissolves, stirring constantly. Add coffee and simmer 5 minutes. Season gravy to taste. Serve over ham slices.
