    *** Karo "Dutch Treat" Icebox Cookies

    Based on a priceless 100-year old Dutch recipe
    3-1/2 cups Sifted all-purpose flour
    1/4 tsp Salt
    1/2 tsp Baking soda
    1 cup Butter or margarine
    3/4 cup Karo Syrup
    1/2 cup Sugar, granulated or brown

    Sift together flour, salt and baking soda. Beat butter until soft and creamy. Add Karo syrup and sugar. Add sifted dry ingredients, and mix thoroughly with hands until stiff dough is formed. Shape into 3 rolls. Wrap in wax paper, chill in refrigerator 3-4 hours, or until firm enough to slice. Slice about 1/8-inch thick. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in hot oven (400 deg) for 10 minutes. Makes about 8 dozen 2-inch cookies.
    Cook's Notes

    Make 8 kinds form basic recipe above! For Coconut cookies: Add 1 cup shredded coconut after the sugar. For Chocolate cookies: Sift 6 Tbsp cocoa with flour. For Chocolate Nut cookies: Add 1 cup chopped nut meats to chocolate variation. For Spice cookies: Add 1 tsp each of cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg and sift with dry ingredients. For fruit cookies: Add 1/2 cup chopped mixed candied fruits to the dough. For Fruit Spice cookies: Combine fruit and spice variations given. For Raisin cookies: Add 1 tsp each of cinnamon, cloves, allspice and nutmeg; 1 cup chopped raisins before adding flour.
