    Old Fashion Orange Cookies

    Source of Recipe

    Cookielady

    1/2 C Margerine or Butter
    1/2 C Crisco
    2 C Sugar

1 Med Size Orange - zested & juice squeezed out
    3 Eggs
1 C Buttermilk or Soured Milk (milk + vinegar)

    1 tsp Bkg Soda
    1 tsp Bkg Powder
    4 1/2 - 5 C Flour

    Icing:

    1lb Pwd Sugar
1 Med size Orange - zested & juice squeezed out
    4 tbsp margerine
    drop of orange food coloring

Cream fats & sugar. Add orange juice & finely chopped zest, eggs, & milk. Once mixed, add the bkg soda & pwd and 4 1/2 C flour. If dough is too sticky, add add'l 1/2 C flour.

Drop small mounds onto cookie sheet. Bake @ 350 10min - 11.5 min.

Mix up icing while cookies are baking. Add add'l pwd sugar if too thin & if too thick, add a few drops of milk or water. If you want your cookies to look like they have a glaze icing, you ice them while they are still slightly warm, and if you want just a regular icing on them, ice them when cool.

A really good orange is important. This last batch I got from Aldi's was super tasty & therefore so were the cookies. I've made them with orange juice from a container, & it's just not the same.

BTW: These cookies don't turn brown. You know they are done when they don't squish down when you touch them gently while in the oven.
