    Here is an old Chinese trick: fill a small clay pot (that has a lid) with plain white sand. Store fresh gingerroot by burying it in the sand. It will keep for months! Much better than those dried up roots you find on your refrigerator shelves.

    Two drops of yellow food coloring added to boiling noodles will make them look homemade.

    When shelling pecans, if you want them to come out whole, pour some boiling water over the pecans and let them sit for thirty minutes before cracking.

    If you're making a recipe that calls for ground nuts, grinding them with a little sugar from the recipe will keep them from becoming too sticky and oily.

    Any time you have too much soft fruit like strawberries and don't know what to do with them, liquefy them with a little sugar and freeze. Use as a sorbet or compote with desserts like chocolate cake.
