French toast usually works better with bread that is slightly stale. Super fresh bread becomes too saturated with the egg mixture, which makes it more difficult to cook and results in 'heavier' french toast.

A tip for creating counter space in the kitchen is to open a drawer and lay your cutting board across it. This adds another area to prepare on (just don't chop on it on top of the open drawer).

From Susan's Daily Tips:
No roasting rack? If you don't have a roasting rack for roasting meat,
you can use a layer of celery or onions to hold the meat off the
bottom of the pan so it will not set in its juices as it cooks. The
layer of celery or onions also provides an added benefit of additional
flavor to the meat, pan drippings and subsequent gravy. I have always
placed carrots, celery and onions in the roasting pan, under the rack
when roasting a turkey.

Cat hair problem on your clothes? - rub the area with a
sheet of fabric softener cloth of the type you use in
the dryer – it will magnetically attract all the loose
hairs..

Dead Skin Removal
Rub a small amount of Miracle Whip (not mayonnaise) into your skin and
let it dry a few minutes. While your skin is still slightly moist,
massage it vigorously with your fingertips. You'll be surprised at how
much dead skin will roll right off. This treatment is very good for
feet, elbows, knees and face.

From Susan's Daily Tips:
Don't throw out sprouting garlic. Instead, plant the cloves fairly
close together in a pot or in the garden (if your climate is suitable
at the time). The new shoots that appear will have a mild garlic
flavor and can be used in the same manner as regular chives.

When cleaning your filing cabinet keep these things
in mind:
Tax Returns should be kept for 7 years.
Bank Statements for 3 years
Credit Card Statements and pay stubs for 1 year
**********************************
When painting the bottom of any object, such as a house
or fence, to prevent the dirt from sticking to your brush,
use an old dust pan to keep it away from the ground.
**********************************
To get rid of paint odor, put a pail of water in the
freshly painted room and the odor should diminish
considerably.
**********************************
Removing the seafood odor from hands:
Scrub your hands with toothpaste! It works better than lemon.
**********************************
Tired of holding a nail and then hitting your finger? Well, try this, hold the nail with a comb and hold the comb instead.
**********************************
When your glass coffee carafe is in need of cleaning, place several ice cubes in the pot with some salt and "swish" around for a minute or so -- works like magic to remove any coffee stains.
**********************************
Instead of using harsh commercial cleaners to clean your copper pots and pans, use salt and vinegar with a soft rag for an eco-friendly alternative.
**********************************
If you cook with alot of bell pepper, onion, and celery as I do then this is a great tip for you. Buy these veggies in bulk while they are on sale, then dice them up and freeze them....so whenever you are ready to cook with them you toss them in... great for rice and gravy, etouffe, gumbo's etc...
**********************************
For bad odours put coffee grounds in a pie plate and then put in
the refrigerator or freezer. Use new grounds. The grounds
will absorb the odour - will even go right into the back workings
to absorb odours. When you can no longer smell the coffee,
change the grounds. It also works to remove bad smells or even paint
smells in rooms. Works very well!

A simple substitute for dry onion soup mix that doesn’t call for onions: For each envelope of dry onion soup, substitute 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium beef bouillon granules, 1/4 teaspoon parsley flakes, and 1/8 teaspoon each celery seed, paprika and pepper.
If your family doesn’t like onion and garlic, feel free to replace them with a variety of herbs instead. In ground beef recipes, try basil and oregano. In pork and chicken recipes, try rosemary and thyme. Add 1/4 teaspoon at a time, and taste before adding more if needed.
**********************************
Stainless steel should be washed quickly after cooking salty foods because salt can pit the surface.

From Susan's Daily Tips:
I am always looking for new ways to get rid of cat hair on carpet and
furniture. I have recently discovered a great trick for quick pick
up. I bought a toilet brush the horseshoe shape not the round one,
and use it exclusively for picking up hair along the walls and
furniture bottoms. I was amazed at how much hair I had missed after
vacuuming. Now I use the brush before and after vacuuming, just to be
sure

Replace the water called for in cake recipes with milk. This results in much richer cakes.
**********************************
When making a pot of bean or split pea soup, add 2 slices of fresh lemon. It brings out the flavor of the ingredients and reduces the need for salt.
**********************************
Add a teaspoon of molasses to beef stew for an irresistible sweetness.
**********************************
Try adding maple flavoring instead of vanilla in your peanut butter cookies. It makes wonderful change.
**********************************
Coat chicken breasts with a mixture of olive oil, rosemary and oregano before roasting them for a zippy flavor.
**********************************
Add a little brown sugar to the flour to coat liver before frying. Makes a huge difference.
I would have to add the whole box of br. sugar before I could eat liver!
LOL!! Linda
**********************************
Use paint brushes to dust cracks and hard
to reach places in telephones, stereos, etc. A small
paint brush is aslo useful for cleaning difficult to
reach areas.
**********************************
Fresh vegetables may be blanched in the microwave. Prepare
the vegetables as desired (whole, chopped, etc.) and place
in microwave casserole. Microwave on High power (100%) for
3-4 minutes per pound, covered, stirring or rearranging
halfway through the time. Plunge immediately into ice cold
water to cool. Drain, pack and freeze. Microwaved vegetables
are HEALTHIER! More nutrients, especially Vitamin C, are
retained when microwaved than when conventionally blanched
or cooked.
**********************************
Place aluminum foil under the napkin in your roll basket
& the rolls will stay hot longer.

A Heloise Tip
To Clean Plasma Screens
Unplug the power cord. Eliminate dust by wiping screen with a microfiber cloth. Use it to also clean the remote control. Never use any solvent on the screen. Carefully vacuum the vents on the rear panel.
**********************************
Pilling is caused by items rubbing against each other
in the washer and dryer. Prevent it by turning suscep-
tible clothes inside out and washing them in a mesh
bag or a drawstring pillowcase.

From Susan's Daily Tips:
CAKE DECORATING TIP
Decorate cake frosting with ease. Use a Toothpick to draw your design
on the cake, then pipe the frosting over your lines.

One of the best stain removers for white t-shirts, onesies, and other white items follows: Fill the washer with water and add 1 part Clorox bleach, 1 part Cascade (dishwashing soap), and one part laundry detergent. Let the washer enter the wash cycle to 'stir' the three ingredients and then put in the items to be washed. Turn off the washer and the let the items soak for a couple of hours (longer if needed). This works great for formula stains. It is important to remember that it will fade colors so this is for 'whites' only.
