    Homemade Laundry Soap

    Source of Recipe

    Mrs. Fixit

    Recipe Introduction

    When I saw this on tv, I thought I'd give it a try. I have been using it for the last month and it has done a very good job. The initial investment is about $7.00. The first batch made more than 3 gallons of laundry soap and there were more than enough ingredients remaining to make several more batches. Once it cools, it is quite "gloppy", but a good shake before pouring will do the trick. I stored it in several old detergent bottles. Believe it or not a few simple ingredients can get your laundry washed, smelling fresh and save you a great deal of money.

    List of Ingredients

    natural bar soap* (for cleaning)
    washing soda** (for removing dirt and odors)
    Borax (for brightening and deodorizing)
    water (for melding together)

    * I used Ivory soap
    **I used Arm & Hammer

    Recipe

    Fill a large pot with 3 cups of water and put it on the stove to heat up.
    Use a vegetable peeler or a box grater to shred a whole bar of soap.
    Once the water is boiling, turn it down and add the soap shavings. Stir them until completely melted.
    Fill a large bucket that has a tight fitting lid with 3 gallons of hot water.
    Pour one cup of washing soda, a third of a cup of borax and your melted soap into the bucket.
    Stir it all until well mixed.
    Once cooled, use a cup of detergent for each load of laundry.
