    Family Circus Library 1972

    List of Ingredients

    3 cup all-purpose flour
    3/4 cup granulated sugar
    3 teaspoons baking powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts
1/4 cup firmly packed barown sugar
    1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
    1 egg
    1 1/4 cups milk
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter or margarine, melted
1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for topping)
    1 tablespoons lemon juice

    Recipe

    1. Sift flour, the 3/4 cup granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, soda, and nutmeg into a large bowl; stir in walnuts, brown sugar, and lemon peel.
    2. Beat egg slightly with milk in a small bowl; stir in melted butter or margarine; pour all at once into flour mixture. Stir about 30 strokes, or just until evenly moist. Spoon into a well-greased loaf pan, 9x5x3; let stand 20 minutes.
    3. Bake in moderate over (350 degrees F) 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
    4. Cool in pan on a wire rack 5 minutes, turn out onto rack.
    5. Mix the 1 tablespoon granulated sugar and lemon juice in a cup; brush over top of loaf several times to glaze. Cool loaf completely; wrap and store a least a day before slicing.
