CREAM SOFTENED BUTTER AND SHORTENING; GRADUALLY ADD SUGAR TO MIXTURE, BEATING WELL, ON MEDIUM SPEED. ADD EGGS, ONE AT A TIME, BEATING AFTER EACH ADDITION. COMBINE FLOUR, BAKING POWDER AND SALT. ADD TO CREAMED MIXTURE ALTERNATLY WITH MILK, BEGINING AND ENDING WITH FLOUR MIXTURE. MOX AFTER EACH ADDITION. STIR IN FLAVORINGS. POUR BATTER INTO A GREASED AND FLOURED 10-INCH TUBE PAN. BAKE AT 325 DEGREES FOR 1 HOUR AND 30 MINUTES OR UNTIL A WOODEN PICK INSERTED IN CENTER COMES OUT CLEAN. COOL CAKE IN PAN 10 MINUTES; REMOVE FROM PAN AND COOL ON WIRE RACK. SPOON HAT GLAZE OVER WARM CAKE. LET COOL COMPLETLY.

COMBINE SUGAR AND WATER IN A SMALL SAUCEPAN; BRING TO A BOIL. REMOVE FROM HEAT. ADD ALMOND EXTRACT.
