Ever bought a cantaloupe, honeydew melon or watermelon only to discover later that it’s
spoiled. On your next shopping spree keep these tips in mind.
Cantaloupe
Look for smooth round cantaloupe with netting all the way around and a depressed area at the stem area. Then sniff it! If it has a ‘good cantaloupe aroma it’s the one for you.
Avoid soft or bruised cantaloupe.
Honey Dew Melon
If the melon has a velvety texture, a yellowish-white to creamy white color and pleasing aroma, add it to your cart.
Avoid hard, pure-white or green honeydews as well as those that are cut or bruised.
Watermelon
A good watermelon is roughly 92% water. Look for heavy smooth and symmetrical fruits with a dark red flesh and cream-colored area on the bottom.
Avoid dented or bruised watermelon with white streaks or white seeds.
