Cake:
1 lb. each chopped dates; candy orange slices, chopped
2 cups chopped pecans
4 cups flour
1 cup butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
2 tbsp. grated orange zest
1 tsp. soda
1-1/3 cups buttermilk
Glaze:
2 cups sugar
1-1/3 cups orange juice
Recipe
Heat oven to 300ºF (150ºC). Cake: Dredge dates, orange slices and nuts in 1/4 cup flour. Cream butter. Add sugar gradually. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add orange zest. Sift soda with remaining 3-1/4 cups flour. Add alternately to batter with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour. Fold in dates, candy and nuts. Bake in greased tube pan 50 - 60 minutes. Top with glaze while still hot. Glaze: Heat sugar and orange juice to boiling point. Pour over hot cake. Let cool in pan. Makes 10-12 servings.
