    She made these for her Saint Joseph Alter every year.
    excellent cookies.

    List of Ingredients




    5 lbs. flour
    3 cups sugar
    4 tablespoons baking powder
    1 lb. shortening (Crisco)
    9 eggs, beaten
    1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
    1 cup milk

    Recipe



    1. combine flour, sugar, & baking powder in a bowl.
    2. cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal.
    3. add beaten eggs & vanilla & beat together.
    4. add sufficient milk to hold together & make a dough.
    5. pinch off small pieces of dough and roll out on a floured surface until they are 6 or 7 inches long & 2 inches wide.
    6. spread fig filling down the center of these flour strips.
    7. fold edges over to the center over laping and covering the filling. press to seal.
    8. cut into thumb length pieces and snip small slits in top to allow steam to escape.
    9. shape as desired.
    10. bake at 400 degrees for 18 - 20 minutes or intil LIGHT BROWN ON BOTTOM. tops will not brow.
    11. cool before icing.
    One batch of this dough makes about 200 cookies about 1 1/2 inches long.
