Sausage and Apple Stuffing

8 cups cubed white bread (about 16 slices)
1 pound pork sausage
1 large onion, diced
2 large apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
Recipe
Spread bread cubes on large cookie sheets; place in oven at 250° for 10 minutes; remove from oven; set aside.
Brown sausage in a skillet; breaking up larger pieces. Cook until no trace of pink remains. Combine with bread cubes in a large bowl.
Pour off all but 2 tablespoons of drippings from skillet. Add onions, and sauté until tender. Stir in water and apples; heat to boiling. Pour over bread and sausage mixture; add salt; toss lightly until evenly moist.
Makes enough to stuff a 12-pound turkey.
