    Recipe Introduction


    These are Christmas cookies that look like Candy Canes. Mom use to let us do the twisting and cane shaping.


    List of Ingredients


    • 3 1/4 Cup Sifted All Purpose Flour
    • 4 tsp Baking Powder
    • 1 Tsp Salt
    • 1/2 Cup (1 Stick) Butter
    • 1 1/4 Sugar
    • 1 Egg
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla
    • 1/4 Cup Milk
    • Red Food Coloring


    Instructions


    1. Measure flour, baking powder and salt into a sifter.
    2. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy in a large bowl.
    3. Beat in egg and vanilla
    4. Sift in dry ingredients, a third at a time, adding alternately with milk, stir well until blended.
    5. Spoon half of dough into medium size bowl. Blend in a few drops of red food color to pink or light red. Leave the other half plain.
    6. Pinch off a a teaspoonful each of red and white dough at a time.Roll each into a strip about 4 or 5 inches long on a LIGHTLY floured board.
    7. Place the strips side by side and press the ends together. Then twist into a rope.
    8. You can shape into candy canes or circles. Place on a cookie sheet about 1 inch apart.
    9. Bake in moderate oven 350 for 10 minutes or until firm.
    10. Remove carefully from sheets and cool on wire racks.


    Final Comments


    This should make about 5 dozen, unless you make larger.
