    Grandma (Gertrude) Schnobrich

    Recipe Introduction

This was the red cabbage Grandma use to serve as a side dish. It probably came from near the Schnee Eifel where her parents came from.

    List of Ingredients

    • 2 lbs of shredded red cabbage
    • 2 tart apples (shredded)
    • 1/2 bay leaf
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 4 cloves
    • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
    • 1 tbsp shortening
    • 1 cup water
    • 1 tsp sugar
    • salt and pepper

    Instructions

    1. Put the cabbage, apples, bay leaf, salt and cloves in a large bowl, pour in the vinegar and mix well.
    2. Cover and let sit over night
    3. The next day heat the fat (shortening) in a large pot and add the cabbage mixture.
    4. Add one cup of water and one teaspoon sugar.
    5. Cook until tender.
    6. Season with salt and pepper.
