    "Nana" to Bubbe & Alex

    Crust:

1/3 c. cold butter or margarine
1 pkg. (2 layer) white cake mix
    1 egg

    Topping:

1 pkg. (8 oz) chopped dates
    1 1/4 c. chopped pecans
    1 cup water
    1/2 tsp. vanilla
    confectioner's sugar

Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour a 13x9 baking pan.

For crust, cut butter into cake mix with pastry blender or two knives
until mixture is crumbly. Add egg; stir well (mixture will be
crumbly). Pat mixture into bottom of pan.

For topping, combine dates, pecans and water in medium saucepan.
Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until mixture thickens,
stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract.
Spread date mixture evenly over crust. Bake 25 to 30 minutes. Cool
completely in pan on wire rack. Dust with confectioners sugar.
