MOTHER IN LAW'S SAUERKRAUT CASSEROLE

2 large cans sauerkraut drained
2 large tart apples peeled ,cored and chopped
1 small onion peeled and chopped
1/4 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon bacon drippings
salt and pepper to taste
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 lb pkg of smoked sausages sliced into rounds
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
six slices american cheese
1 tablespoon ketchup
1/2 cup water
Preheat oven to 350
Mix everything together except cheese and sausage----Layer kraut mixture and sausages alternately sprinkling cheese between layers---saving sliced cheese for the top after baking covered ----Bake 35 minutes covered and then remove lid and top with cheese slices bake 6 minutes uncovered.
