3-1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1-1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt necessary
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup dark molasses
1 egg
powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 350°F. Sift together first 9 ingredients in a bowl. Beat butter and sugar in another bowl using an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add molasses and egg and mix thoroughly. Gradually add dry ingredients and beat at low speed until dough forms. Mold into a disc, wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm. Roll dough into 1 inch balls and place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheets. Bake 12-14 minutes, or until golden brown. Transfer to wire racks and dust with sifted powdered sugar. Cool completely
