FRUITCAKE COOKIES

2 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ cup vegetable shortening
1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 egg, beaten
1/3 cup buttermilk
8 ounces chopped dates
½ cup chopped walnuts
½ cup chopped candied red cherries
½ cup chopped candied green cherries
Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Sift flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon together; set aside.
Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and beat well. Add buttermilk alternately with flour mixture beating well after each addition. Fold in remaining ingredients by hand.
Drop dough by teaspoonsfull onto lightly greased baking sheets.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes until cookies are lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack.
