Cheese Scalloped Onions

6 cups thinly sliced onion rings
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup flour
2 cups milk
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
Place onion rings in ungreased 1 1/2 quart casserole dish. Melt butter in saucepan, blend in flour. Gradually stir in milk and cheese. Cook stirring constantly until thick. Add salt. Pour sauce over onions. Top with additional shredded cheese if desired. Bake uncovered at 350 for 1 hour or until onions are tender.
