Snap Beans with Tomatoes

1 pound fresh string beans
4 strips lean bacon
2 onions, large, chopped
2 cups chopped fresh tomatoes
1 tsp salt
1 tsp whole basil leaves
1 cup hot water
String beans, remove tips and cut into 1" pieces. Fry bacon until crisp, drain and put aside. Sauté onions in bacon fat until soft but not brown. Add remaining ingredients. Cover and simmer for ½ to ¾ hour or until the beans are tender. Serve topped with the crumbled bacon.
