Recipe Introduction
John loves pulled pork sandwiches from Buster's Barbecue on route 17B outside of Monticello, NY. I found this recipe and it's pretty similar.
List of Ingredients
1 quart warm water plus more as needed
3 1/2 tbsp. Pork Grilling Rub (from William Sonoma)
5 lbs. boneless pork shoulder
1 yellow onion, sliced
2 1/2 cups mustard and molasses BBQ sauce (from William Sonoma) or any bbq sauce you like
8 to 10 hamburger buns, split and toastedRecipe
Pour the warm water into a large bowl. Add 2 tbsp. of the grilling rub and whisk to dissolve.
Put the pork in a slow cooker. Add the onion and pour in the water, adding more if needed to cover the pork by 1/2 inch.
Cover the slow cooker and cook for 5 hours according to the manufacturer's instructions. To test for doneness, pull the meat apart with tongs, it is ready when it shreds easily.
Continue cooking as needed, up to 1 hour more.
Transfer the meat to a baking sheet, cover with aluminum foil and let stand until cool enough to handle, about 1 hour. Using your hands, shred the meat, discarding any large pieces of fat, and transfer to a large bowl.
Stir in the remaining 1 1/2 tbsp. grilling rub and the 2 1/2 cups bbq sauce.
To serve place about 2/3 cup of the meat at the bottom of each bun. Top with additional bbq sauce and the top of the buns.
