Wassail: Wassail Festive Holiday Punch

List of Ingredients
1 cup granulated sugar
2 cups water
1 tablespoon whole cloves
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon powdered ginger
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt

1 gallon apple cider or apple juice
1 can (6 ounce) frozen lemonade
1 can (6 ounce) frozen orange juice
1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
2 lemons, seeded, sliced thin
2 oranges, seeded, sliced thin
4 Cinnamon sticks, 2 inches long
Maraschino cherries, with stems (optional)
Recipe
Bring the pint of water to a boil. Add 1 cup sugar. Make a syrup by boiling for 10 minutes. Place spices in cheesecloth and tie them up. Drop spice bag in the boiling syrup. Add 3 individual size tea bags. Simmer for 5 inutes. Turn off heat, remove tea bags, cover and let stand for 1 hour. Remove spice bag. Strain mixture. Add juices, dark brown sugar and rest of ingredients. Cherries are a nice touch, but optional. Cinnamon sticks may be removed before serving, if desired. Taste and adjust seasonings. Add a little water, if flavor reduction is desired. Serve HOT, but do NOT boil.
Note: 4 cups Claret or Madeira Wine and 1 cup Dry Sherry may be added.
