    Source of Recipe

Wal-Mart (Black History Month Celebrity Recipes)

    Recipe Introduction

Justice Alan Page went from the National Football League to the Supreme Court. A 15-year veteran with the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears, Justice Page was the first defensive player in NFL history to receive the Most Valuable Player Award. While playing football, Justice Page also attended law school full time and earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota. He later became an assistant attorney general and served on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. In 1993, he was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court.

    Influences:
“‘Simple Justice,’ by Richard Kluger had a great impact on my life. The book chronicles the struggle to end the segregation of schools and establish equality under law.”

“My wife introduced me to Mississippi mud cake early in our marriage, thus I associate it with love and family. Moreover, it’s delicious.”

    List of Ingredients

    2 cups granulated sugar
    2 cups flour
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/2 cup shortening
    1 cup butter, divided
    6 tbsp. baking cocoa, divided
    1/2 cup buttermilk
    2 eggs, beaten
    1 tbsp. vanilla
3 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
    2 cups chopped walnuts

    Recipe

    1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 15x10x1-inch baking pan. Set aside.
    2. In a medium bowl stir together granulated sugar, flour, baking soda and salt.

    3. In a small saucepan combine 1 cup water, shortening, 1/2 cup of the butter and 3 tablespoons of the cocoa; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and stir until combined. Stir into dry ingredients. Add buttermilk, eggs and vanilla. Beat until combined.

    4. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean.

    5. For frosting, in a medium saucepan melt remaining 1/2 cup butter; stir in 1/4 cup water and remaining 3 tablespoons cocoa. Add powdered sugar; beat until smooth. (Stir in milk or water 1 tablespoon at a time if frosting is too thick.) Stir in walnuts. Spread frosting on hot cake, then cool cake completely.

    YIELD: 16 Servings
